My best artwork this semester was my relief tile. I really like how it turned out because it shows more about who I am and it is actually a piece that turned out. I think that it turned out because I took more time with it and I had fun making it. If I could redo an artwork it would be the very first thing we made which was our signature stamp. I was not super happy with how I decided to make it and I didn't use it as much as I should have. I liked how I glazed it but I feel like it just wasn't me in how I put the lettering. The biggest thing I learned in this class is to not give up no matter how frustrated you get. I had a lot of times where I was just done with the project I was working on and it wasn't turning out, so I fired it and just threw it together. I wish that I would have put in more effort and finished them because when I did put in my effort and didn't give up I liked how my pieces turned out. One thing that I wish we could have tried was the pottery wheel because I think I would have enjoyed that if I could have gotten that to work.

For my set art pieces I decided to make a beauty set. I have three pieces that are all marbled with glaze for a design. The colors in the marbling are all underglazes. They are blue, purple, and a maroon. The first piece is a small bowl that is flat that I created as intent to hold rings and earrings. The inside is glazed with blue grey glaze. The next piece I made is a taller cup like piece that is intended to hold makeup brushes. The inside is the same as the bowl and the outside is the marbled glaze. Underneath the marble I used white underglaze. My last piece I created is a flat piece of clay with an edge around the outside that is intended for me to set my straightener on. The top is the marbling and the side edges are the blue grey color. I will call this set the "Three Piece Beauty Set." I created this set using white clay using hand building techniques to make all three pieces. I then used underglaze on them and marbled them with shaving cream and underglaze. Then I fired them and used blue grey glaze and a clear coat of glaze to seal them. I made this set because I wanted to make pieces that I could use and that would not just sit around. At first I was going to make a set of plant pots but I can't keep plants alive and I couldn't find any ideas that I liked. I looked a lot for ideas that I wanted to create and could not find anything that I really wanted to make. I thought about what I needed and came up with a straightener holder first. Then I went off the beauty topic and knew that I needed something bigger to hold my rings and earrings, and a makeup brush holder. I looked online for pictures to inspire me, but once again I did not find anything that I liked so I created them without any inspiration. My goals for this set was to create something useful that all matched. I know that I reached that goal because I love how the marble turned out and how they are all similar with the technique and colors. I also will use these for the intended purpose because they turned out how I imagined them when I started. I learned that not every piece has to be something that you find online because some things you will not find and they will look exactly how you want them to in your head. I love how they turned out, because they look neat and now I have something to set my straightener on, something to hold my jewelry, and something to hold my makeup brushes. My set is going to be functional and it is decorative with the marble design that I used.
This artwork piece is a sculpture of an octopus. The tentacles are on the bottom and the curve like swirls but the bottom is flat. The head is in the middle of the tentacles, and I gave it eyes and a mouth. It is glazed with blue caprice all over. I created my octopus by starting with a slab of white clay and I cut out the tentacles. I then made the head and put it onto the bottom part. Then I cut out the face and holes in the bottom by carving out clay bits. Then I fired it and glazed it, and then fired it again. I decided to make an octopus because when I was looking online for inspiration I saw a bunch of oceany things and wanted to do something of a sea creature. Then I seen the dolphin sculptures at sea world and thought that an octopus sculpture would go well with dolphins. Octopuses are such a cool creature because of how their tentacles just swarm freely. The picture in the top right is what inspired my sculpture. My goals for this piece was to create a sculpture that would look decent somewhere in sea world. I think that my octopus would be a good edition and I think that little kids would love to take pictures by it. I think that it is very cute and it makes me happy to look at. Throughout the whole process I just wanted to express my love for sea creatures and make a cute sculpture that would look great at sea world.
A new skill that I tried was glaze marbling with shaving cream. For research I first looked up pictures to see how it would turn out and what kind of piece would look good with the marbling. Then I watched two different videos that showed me what I needed and how to use the technique. Both videos showed very similar processes. First they both had newspaper or something put down to protect the table. The process was very simple and you only need a few things. The supplies needed are shaving cream, glaze (I used underglaze), suction tube thing to pick up the glaze, a stir stick to make the marbling design, your clay piece, something flat to make the shaving cream even, and a sink to wash off the shaving cream. On my first piece I tested I used my "M" from my relief tile. I used purple underglaze before I fired it the first time and then I did the marbling technique. I set up my area and protected the table with newspaper and then I got my shaving cream and put a good amount on the newspaper. I made it even with my blue scraper and then I used my squeezer thing to get blue underglaze out of the bottle and put it onto the shaving cream. Once I had enough glaze on the shaving cream, I took my stick to swirl around the glaze to make a marble design. Once I had my design I took my piece and rolled it in the shaving cream. Once it was all covered where I wanted the glaze to go I rinsed off the shaving cream. Then I let it dry, and fired it. After that firing I finished it with clear glaze and did a final firing. After that test piece I was going to do another test piece before I did my final piece. I used a cup like piece that I will use to hold jewelry. I really like how this one turned out. I started a bowl for my final piece and I used black underglaze and was going to use a white marbling. I did the process and when I went to wash it off, it didn't work and the glaze washed right off. I had another piece that I had not glazed to see if I could get it to work on that and it washed off that too. I was very frustrated and didn't know what I was doing wrong. I gave up and decided to use the "M" as my test piece and the jewelry holder as my final piece. With the pieces that it didn't work with, I glazed them with colorburst and still made them look pretty cool. After giving up with the technique I decided to give it one more goal with my set. I am so glad that I didn't give up because I love how the set turned out with matching marbling. I learned that sometimes new things are frustrating when they are not working out and you don't know what you are doing wrong. I learned to not give up and keep trying. I also had a lot of fun trying this technique and this project made me enjoy the class more. I am super happy with how the outcome of these pieces turned out and I am glad I found a fun technique to use on my set project.
For my relief tile I started with a slab and then used my carver to carve into it. I used express as a studio habit with the different objects I carved and added on to express more about who I am. I started with the lake background with the treeline because the lake is my happy place. I put a paddle board on the lake because I could lay on the paddle board all day long. I also added a tennis net with the racket and ball because tennis is my favorite sport and the courts are a happy place for me. I also decided to add a softball and hockey sticks because softball and hockey have always played a big part in my life. I used envision as another studio habit because I had to picture what I wanted my tile to look like and where to add on and where to carve into. I then cut out my "M" and carved vines into it because I really like plants but I can not take care of them to save my life. I used underglaze for all of the colors and put a clear coat to lock it all in. For the "M" I used a glaze marbling technique with shaving cream and I think the final piece turned out very good.
While creating my coil vessel I used engage and persist to keep building up the coils. I wanted to stop because it took a long time to roll out all the coils and braid them when they were falling apart. I am really happy that I kept on building it up because I like how the final piece turned out. I used envision the most to figure out what coils I wanted to put where and if I wanted to braid them or do a different design. I had to figure out when good times were to smooth out the inside so it wouldn't be as difficult at the end. I glazed the inside with opaque white and on the outside from top to bottom the glazes are mosaic blue, light blue, and blue caprice.
To create my slab box I cut out 4 rectangles and 2 squares and used my texture roller to make the sides designed. I slip and scored all of the corners together to make a box. I used develop craft with the slip and score because I had to learn what amount of slip and how much scoring was best for the sides to mend together. After my box was put together I used envision to picture how I wanted to cut the top off. This was the hardest thing because the top did not come off easy. I used a knife and just went up and down and smoothed out the edges when it was off. I cut out a triangle for the top because if you look closely my design is triangles. This could also go under observe as a studio habit. Once it was fired I used opaque white as a base coat for the outside and put kaboom over that. Then I used dutch blue for the inside and true red for the triangle on top.
While creating my texture roller I had to used envision to picture what line had to go where when drawing my design on my pvc pipe. I also used engage and persist when I was glueing my pvc pipe because it took a really long time and took a while to get used to how to make it look like my design. I figured out the techniques on how to use the glue gun and how much glue to use.
While creating my sphere I used stretch and explore to create a design that I liked. Normally I would have wanted to just make a simple and easy design but I decided that it would look best to take the time and carve nice and smooth designs. I really enjoy the way my sphere turned out with adding clay on and carving into it. I also thought that it would be cool to put to make a design with the hole that we had to put into it. I made some of the holes go through the clay into the middle and some don't. For this I used observe because you can see that if you look close. For glazing I used plum jelly for the parts that are carved into and I used blue caprice for the parts that I added on to.
While creating my pinch pots I used develop craft when I learned how to build the pots. I had to learn what wetness/dryness worked best to smooth the pots out and when creating them. I also used engage and persist to keep on working on them and smoothing them out when it wasn't working. With the peapod pot I made it was difficult to get the three pots to stick as one so I remade it and it worked better. For the first pot I made I used cantan jade on the inside and nautical jade on the outside. The second pot I used lilac on the inside and plum jelly on the outside. The last pot I used glade green on the inside. For the outside I used cheeky pink, lilac and nautical jade.
